Greetings Movie Fans!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With so many other things taking my time and attention, I somehow managed to let several weeks go by without a visit to any of my local movie theatres. Shocking, right? I was definitely missing it–and worried that some of the things that I really wanted to see might soon be making way for new releases. So I made time to see five movies in ten days, starting with Inception<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What follows are my own thoughts about the movie. I have made an effort to keep from revealing any major spoilers, but if it is really important to you to see a film without any hint of what is to come, please stop here, go see the movie, then come right back and check your opinions against mine. I welcome and appreciate all of your comments, whether you agree with me or not.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Inception<\/strong> stars Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a> with a fantastic ensemble cast including\u00a0Ellen Page<\/a>, Ken Watanabe<\/a>, Joseph Gordon-Levitt<\/a>, Marion Cotillard<\/a>, Tom Hardy<\/a>, Cillian Murphy<\/a>, Tom Berenger<\/a>, Michael Caine<\/a>, and Dileep Rao<\/a>.\u00a0 It is a near-future sci-fi movie based on the idea that if someone could participate in your dreams and manipulate your dream experiences, you might give away secrets as you slept–basically a whole new way to engage in industrial espionage.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To be honest, based on the trailers for this movie, I did not expect to like it all that much. It looked like it might be another special-effects fest, with just enough story to string the effects together.\u00a0 I am happy to report that I could not have been more wrong.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Inception<\/strong> is a really good movie. Yes, it has plenty of high quality special effects.\u00a0 It also has action, drama and enough suspense to keep me on the edge of my seat for most of its 2 hours and 28 minutes.\u00a0 It was\u00a0kind of like watching a James Bond film\u00a0without all the kitsch.\u00a0 Because most of the action took place in a fictional dream state,\u00a0the filmmakers could play around with reality.\u00a0 But they (and by “they” I mean writer\/director\/producer Christopher Nolan<\/a>) showed a lot of restraint.\u00a0\u00a0This was much\u00a0more a smart\u00a0action film than\u00a0it was a sci-fi special effects film.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All of the\u00a0film’s reported $160 million budget can be seen on the screen.\u00a0 Besides the stunning visual effects, the sound, editing, and the performances by every member of the cast–essentially everything that goes into making a quality motion picture–are first rate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/object><\/p>\n

My recommendation?<\/strong> Definitely see this one<\/span>, and try to catch it while it is still in the theatres because the big screen and big sound, while not absolutely essential, will make a difference.\u00a0 If available in your area, try it in IMAX for that in-your-face experience.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
