Welcome back Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans!
This third episode of season two opens with Hydra pulling “A Clockwork Orange” on Agent 33 (Maya Stojan).
We are also reintroduced to Ward (Brett Dalton) and his justifications for being Mr. Evil. He points out how those pesky morals always get in the way of doing one’s job.
I guess I am not the superhero follower that I should be, because, when physics does not make sense, I want to call writers on it.
For example, when Donnie Gill (Dylan Minnette) decides to freeze part of the harbor and a ship floating within, I would like to know where he is getting the energy to do so. Cooling things down, takes a pile of extra energy. Just ask your car dealer about the functioning of the A.C in your vehicle.
Making Friends And Influencing People:
Skye (Chloe Bennet) is asked if she has ever killed anyone. She responds, “None that I know of”. Naturally, this is writer- speak for ensuring she will have to kill someone before the episode is over.
Ward, who was absent last week, is back and feeling sorry for himself. The man justifies why he is now a bad guy. Poor Ward. It was all because of surrogate dad, John Garrett (Bill Paxton). Skye is so bitter, Ward could tell her the winning lotto numbers and she would have none of it. This episode plays to the old saying, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”.
Over all, SHIELD is a much better series this season. The team is more cohesive, Coulson (Clarke Gregg) has done a great job sitting in the big chair, and the addition of new cast members has provided a freshness to the story arc.
This episode, I think, belonged to the poor, damaged Fitz. We all sympathise with him. He is a truly tragic character. Iain De Caestecker nailed it with a heartbreaking moment when Fitz showed how much Ward had hurt him – barely able to speak in his presence and then, in an, “Ooooh!” moment, as he nearly hurt him the same way, by taking away his oxygen. It was also a well written moment when Fitz banished Simmons’ (Elizabeth Henstridge)‘ghost’ as well.
May (Ming Na Wen) gives us more to chew on as we anticipate what she might do to “get even” with Hunter. Her line, “Don’t be sorry. Just wait”, reminds us that May is definitely seeing revenge as “a dish best served cold”. However, whatever the revenge will be, it will have to be epic after such huge build up over several shows. At least, that was my thought, until the let down for me, near the end of the episode when May admitted that all was forgiven – what?
The writers, as I said last week, have done a marvelous job with Mac (Henry Simmons). He is fast becoming a fan favourite as a very human character with great chemistry with the other actors. He nailed the scene where he played the video game.
British fans may have caught the play on the “Trainspotting “ film, “I’m not Scottish!” line. Great job, writers! Will this become a burning romance or just the smoldering embers of a “look, but don’t touch” relationship?
Simmons is playing the tentative fish out of water role very well as a double agent working for HYDRA. It was great to get some answers about Simmons’ whereabouts. Her relationship with Fitz was so tight last season, that I was sure she was not betraying SHIELD. Having the character begin a normal work day routine gave the show a different feel for a bit, as if we were watching something else.
Simmons’ character also clarifies the title of this episode. Coulson tells her that being under cover is all about making friends. Meanwhile, Hydras purpose is to influence people.
I must say that if I was to compare villains between episode one and episode three, I would have to go with Creel (Brian Patrick Wade). Donnie (Dylan Minnette) as Blizzard was the typical super powered bad guy, but there was something about Creel and his attitude that was much more real. Donnie looked far too innocent to be the bad guy type.
Questions:
What is the Faustus Weapon that Whitehall (Reed Diamond) mentions so casually at the beginning of the episode?
Will Trip’s (BJ Britt) character get more fleshing out, or will he continue to remain in the background? It may be possible that the writers just do not know what to do with him yet. Could he be a red shirt?
Is Donnie still alive? WormholeRiders is betting yes.
