Oh my SPNfamily how I have missed you! Let us get some full on SPN reviewing happening.
Ok Supernatural fans we are stepping into episode 7.04, “Defending Your Life”, leaving the Leviathans behind for now. We start out in Dearborn, Michigan with a “Christine-like” black car. It is chasing a man down, through alleys and jumping sidewalks.
This car wants this man DRT (dead right there). The man makes it to his apartment building and into his apartment. Phew, he is safe. Um…nuh uh uh, NOT!!! The car is in his apartment. What the heck are we dealing with? The car’s engine is revving, the man screams and…SPLAT! Bye bye man.
Sam and Dean arrive the next day to investigate the case. Sam stops before going in the building to thank Dean for letting Amy Pond (Jewel Staite) go even though he did not want to. You can see it in Dean’s face, he feels awful about not telling Sam that he killed her.
Ooooh yay the EMF (Electromagnetic Field) detector is back. We have not seen that in some time. Bringing back the basics. I like it. The meter is picking up something. Is it some kind of ghost? Sam finds some red dirt on the floor of the apartment. The man killed was Matthew Hammond (Angelo Renai). Sam notices monthly charges to a florist and Dean finds a token from AA meetings that says “10 Years Sober”. Dean is not going to the AA meeting to ask questions because AA gives him “the jeebes”. So Dean will go to the florist to explore and Sam will go to the AA meeting to inquire about Matthew Hammond.
Deans talks to the florist (Jenn Griffin) about Matthew Hammond. He tells her that Matthew is dead and she said that explained everything. She said he came in a few days prior and paid three years in advance to keep a monthly delivery going. That is not odd at all. Dean asks where the flowers were being delivered. The flowers were going to an Elizabeth Duren. You know he got the address and where do you think it was? Elizabeth Duren is dead and the flowers were being delivered to the 10 year old’s grave.
While Dean spoke with the florist, Sam was speaking to Matthew Hammond’s AA sponsor. She referred to Matt as a tortured soul, but said he did not talk much. She said that he had a rough week and almost fell off the wagon. She said he called her from “Neil’s Tavern” saying he was about to drink and she showed up to talk him down.
After a little bit of research, the brother’s find that 10 years ago, Matthew Hammond backed out of his driveway and did not see Elizabeth on her bike. He was not charged and it was ruled an accident. We see the connection to the incident happening 10 years ago and he has now been sober for 10 years. The Winchester’s believe that they must be dealing with the vengeful spirit of Elizabeth Duren and they are going to put her to rest by burning her bones. Dean seems to be a little less interested in dealing with the case than Sam.
The next scene opens with being chased by a dog. It looked like a German Shepherd to me. The man is scared to death. He makes it into a restaurant. Phew, he is safe. Um…nuh uh uh, NOT!!! He ran into the men’s bathroom and called 911 only to hear not his best friend panting right next to him. The dog is snarling, the man screams and…CRUNCH! Bye Bye dude.
Dean and Sam are just getting back to their motel room, tired as can be and always with coffee in their hands. Dean has appeared very exhausted in this episode, as though all he wants to do is rest and he cannot. Sam is telling Dean about the animal attack on Christopher Fisher. No patrons saw anything and the 911 operator did not hear anything either.
Further analysis revealed Christopher Fisher had gotten in trouble five years prior for running a dog fighting operation. Dean questions if dogs even have ghosts because they have never heard of such a thing. They also see that even after serving his sentence at an animal shelter, he continued and raised a lot of money for the cause. Sam says, “People change.” Dean responds with, “Tell that to Ghost Dog!” Dean is less than enthused when Sam says, “Get suited up. Let’s go check out the body.”
At the coroner’s office Sam finds red dirt under the animal attack victim’s nails. Both of the cases involve some kind of red dirt. Hmmmm??? Sam finds out there is local apple farm that uses red dirt because it helps them grow.
While traveling to the apple farm to check out hundreds of acres of this red dirt a man jumps out in the middle of the road. Dean slams on the brakes, just barely avoiding hitting him. What do you know, perfect time for the camera to zoom in on the Impala’s tag, Ohio CNK80Q3. The man had his hands up like he was gesturing for them to stop and help him. The man looks traumatized.
Dean and Sam take him back to their room. He is reluctant to tell them what is going on because they will not believe him. He says he was just put on trial and sentenced to death. They asked what he had done. He said he held up a liquor store and killed the owner and his wife. He said he was young when it happened. It took place in 1981 and he was just paroled from serving 30 years in prison for the crime. Dean and Sam are confused. He said he was in a bar one minute, was jumped and was in a courtroom the next. It was not a regular courtroom, but there was a judge. It was in a barn at the apple farm.
Sam asks about the bar the man was at and the man said it was called, “Neil’s Tavern”. That was the same place Matthew Hammond was when he called his sponsor. Dean and Sam are wondering if the animal attack victim went there, as well. The man asks they who they are because they look like they believe him. Sam says, “We kinda specialize in crazy.” They ask what the man remembers about the courtroom, the judge, etc. He does not know the judges name, but remembers there were a lot of symbols everywhere.
Sam is going to check out the farm and Dean will check out…you guessed it, the bar. Something is definitely up with Dean. He does not want to do any of this. Before Sam leaves, he tells the man to show him where the barn is. The man, flat out, refuses to go back. He says the people he killed are out there. He is panic-stricken. Sam lets him know that he is safer with him than staying alone, but he will not go. Sam sits him in a chair and pours a circle of salt around him (ghosts/demons cannot cross salt lines) and tells him to stay put.
Dean is at Neil’s Tavern and flirts a little with the blonde haired bartender. He actually wants to ask her questions about the victims, but she says she has not been there all week. She asks what is on his mind. He asks her, “You ever do something behind someone’s back because you had to?” He is feeling so guilty about not telling Sam about Amy. The bartender flirts back a little and lets him know what time she gets off work.
Sam finds the barn and red dirt. He had contacted Bobby (Jim Beaver), earlier about the symbols and Bobby is now calling him back with intel. What they are dealing with is an Egyptian god named Osiris (Faran Tahir)who plays judge, jury and executioner if he finds you. He pops up in a location, does his thing for a little while, and then leaves. Lore says he can see straight into the human heart. He weighs guilt…if he finds any at all you are sentenced to death. Bobby tells Sam that he and Dean have to leave right away because he hones in on people that feel guilty and that could be either of them.
Dean is somewhat tipsy, thinking he is about to get him some from the bartender. He walks outside of the bar giving himself a pep talk and reminding himself that he is Dean Winchester and this is what he does. His phone rings and he is about to answer Sam’s call. He barely gets the phone flipped open when he gets yanked before he can speak. Only a shadow shows us he was grabbed and his phone was left lying open on the ground. Dun Dun Dun…
The bartender finds the phone outside and calls the last number that called and it was Sam. He answers using Dean’s name and she asks if the phone was Dean’s. She tells Sam that Dean was supposed to meet her outside. Sam heads right to her.
The man left sitting on the chair with the circle of salt notices the lights start flickering. He knows something is coming and he is noticeably horrified, as anyone would be. His foot pushes the salt and opens the circle. He runs out of the room and sees the ghosts of the couple he killed and pleads for his life and apologizes. The ghost of the liquor store owner says, “You did it to us”, and shoots the man. The ghosts just disappear.
Sam meets the bartender and asks where exactly she found the phone. Low and behold there is the same red dirt on the ground. Sam goes back to the barn at the apple farm looking for Dean.
Dean is chained to a chair. The Egyptian god, Osiris is in the barn with Dean. He let Dean know he heard the guilt in him when he was talking at the bar. Osiris knows Sam is lurking and calls him out. Osiris is putting Dean on trial about his guilt and tells Sam that it does not concern him and he needs to leave. Sam immediately says that Dean has the right to counsel and wants to step in as such. Osiris agrees to allow it. Osiris can call any witnesses he wants to prove his case.
He calls Jo (Alona Tal) to the stand. She died when she, her mother Ellen, Dean, and Sam went after Lucifer the first time. Osiris is trying to get Jo to admit she had romantic feelings for Dean and that is why she followed him on some cases. Sam cross-examines and asks if she started hunting to impress a guy or because she wanted to be like her father, who was a hunter. She idolized her father. She says it was because of her father and is about to say something to Dean when Osiris makes her disappear. Obviously, he did not like what she was about to say. Crooked dang judge!
Osiris calls Sam to the stand. He brings up how Sam was going to be a lawyer and marry Jess until Dean cam and pulled him back into hunting. He wants Sam to say that he blames Dean for everything. He does not do that. Osiris explains that it is not about convincing him that someone is innocent. He does not decide Dean’s guilt, but weighs the guilt that is already there. The determining factor is how Dean feels deep down. If Dean believes he is innocent, he will be found innocent, but if he feels guilty about anything, then he will be sentenced to death.
Sam calls Dean to the stand. He asks Dean if he knew that Jess would die when he came for Sam. Of course Dean did not know, he is not psychic. He had no idea. Sam asks about Jo’s death. He asks Dean if he feels guilty or is he just sad that she is gone. Sam asks, “Then is your heart heavy with guilt or just plain heavy and none of this guys business?” Dean says, “What you said…the second thing.”
Osiris asks, “Dean, do you want me to call my last witness?” Dean has flashbacks of killing Amy and of the conversation he and Sam had where Sam thanked him for doing the right thing by letting her go. Sam is wondering what Osiris is talking about. Dean just tells Osiris to sentence him and be done. Sam is a bit thrown off. Osiris finds Dean guilty in his heart and sentences him to die. Dean must handle business quickly.
The brothers find the man they left in the room was killed. They are trying to figure out how to save Dean. Bobby calls and says that a temporary (centuries long) solution is to stab Osiris with a ram’s horn. Where do you find a ram’s horn in Dearborn, Michigan? Sam finds that Jewish people blow through a ram’s horn one time per year. Sam figures, at this time of night, he can steal/borrow one from a Synagogue.
Dean is in their motel room and places himself in the middle of a salt circle. He knows that it will be Jo that kills him since that was a witness called that Dean does feel bad about. He tells her she can come out and she does. She does not want to kill Dean, but Osiris is forcing her into a “twisted eye for an eye”.
Jo and Dean have a heart to heart. He admits to not wanting to hunt alone and that is why he did get Sam and also allowed her to be there during some cases. He tells Jo she deserved better. Jo tells Dean that he carries all kinds of crap he does not have to. Jo says, “Dean it’s time.” She flashes to the stove and turns on the gas to all of the burners.
In the meantime, Osiris is working on his next victim. Jo looks down at the salt circle and tells Dean that she used to hunt ghosts and she knows the tricks. She freezes the window, opens it and a gust of wind blows some of the salt, opening the circle. She reaches into Dean’s shirt and pulls out a lighter.
Sam stabs Osiris from the back with the ram’s horn and kills or temporarily stops him. Newest victim saved, but what about Dean? Jo caresses Dean’s face and the lighter drops from her hand to the floor. Jo just vanishes. Dean is alive to fight another day.
We, of course, have the guys by the Impala having some “Hunter’s Helper” (beer/alcoholic beverage for those that do not know) and are discussing what happened. Sam asks Dean whom Osiris was referring to as the final witness. Dean says that it could be anyone. Dean gets why Osiris put him on trial, but was curious why he skipped over Sam.
Sam says he does not feel guilty anymore. He does not feel like the slate is wiped clean, but knows that he has done so much and has felt guilty in the past. He has paid a lot of dues and even been to Hell, literally. For the first time in a long time he feels good. They drive off and half way zoom in on the Impala’s tag, Ohio CNK80Q3, making that one and a half times during the episode.
Could you imagine being put on trial for guilt in your heart? I do not know anyone that has no guilt or regrets about something. I think we would be in a very empty world. We are still left with a lie between the brothers. When will they be completely straight with one another? What will Sam do when he finds out the truth about Amy? When will we see the Leviathans again?
In case you are wondering, I will admit that I am a Samgirl! Please post your comments. I look forward to reading them. #SPNfamily

Hi Bonnie,
A wonderful and detailed review of “Defending Your Life”. Enjoyed reading your thoughts on the episode as well as the analysis of the character interactions. For me, I thought the Egyptian Osiris story arc was superb with the flashbacks outstanding.
