Ghost World:
The episode begans right where the last episode ended, with Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) bound to a chair as he was being tortured by the ghost of Mason Lockwood (Taylor Kinney). Damon, who could not see Mason, was still under the impression that it was his brother, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), who was torturing him. Damon went so far as to even call out to his brother, Stefan. When Stefan finally stumbled upon Damon chained to a chair and with a giant metal poker jammed right through his chest, Stefan insisted that he was not the one behind this act. Stefan pulled the poker out, but did not unchain Damon from the chair.
Stefan left him behind as the ghost of Mason Lockwood then began to take advantage of the fact that he had removed Damon’s daywalker ring. Mason opened the curtains and the sunlight streamed into the room as it then burned Damon’s skin.
“Ghost World” then shifted to Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) who was meeting with Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis) and her brother, Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) at a Mystic Falls Founder’s Celebration in the town square. As the three watched acting mayor, Carol Lockwood (Susan Walters), while she spoke about the town history; Jeremy was secretly holding hands with his invisible ghost girlfriend, Anna (Malese Jow). Anna was mocking Carol’s distorted perspective of the history of Mystic Falls.
This was a pretty cute scene, don’t you think? The “invisible girlfriend hand-holding in public” was quite endearing. I have always loved Jeremy and Anna as a couple. Team Janna all the way!
The episode then cut across to the other side of the square, where Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) and Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) were hanging decorations for more historical festivities that were set to take place later in the evening. The two were discussing Jeremy’s ability to see and talk to his dead former girlfriends and how Bonnie was wildly uncomfortable with that.
Just as the two girls were talking about Jeremy’s relationship with Anna, Damon (now freed from Mason’s torture) drove up to the town square and stopped his car right beside them. Before the girls could ask Damon what he was doing there, Damon immediately began talking to cut them off.
Damon spoke to Bonnie directly as he told her about the ordeal he had just gone through and that he now suspected that it was the ghost of Mason that was behind the torture. (Just to add, Isn’t Ian Somerhalder just gorgeous here?! It was a nice touch for the color of this classic car to match his eyes just perfectly!)
Bonnie was skeptical, because not only was Mason supposed to be dead, but the ghosts should not be able to affect the physical world. Damon ignored Bonnie’s skepticism as he relayed to her that she must have made a magical error while attempting to send Vicki Donovan (Kayla Ewell) back to the other side.
Damon continued in telling her that it must have somehow resulted in Mason being able to cross over to the physical world. “Whatever you did,” Damon told Bonnie, “fix it.” As Damon drove away, leaving the two girls behind, the camera panned over to Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig), who had been watching and listening to the entire conversation.
Viewers were then brought back over to the Mystic Grill where Elena, Alaric, and Jeremy (as well as ghost Anna, unknowingly) were on the outdoor patio having lunch. Elena confessed to Jeremy that she wanted him to get into contact with another ghost – Stefan’s now dead vampire friend, Lexi Branson (Arielle Kebbel).
Elena knew that Lexi had brought Stefan back from the brink of blood lust many times before. Elena was hoping that if she could get into contact with her somehow, then Lexi could share how to bring Stefan back from his latest decent into his blood-fueled madness. Despite Alaric’s warning that dead vampires were only trouble and Jeremy’s uncertainty of how to contact anyone from the other side besides Anna, Elena was still very insistent in wanting to find a way to get in touch with Lexi.
As this conversation was taking place, the episode inter-cut with Bonnie and Caroline as they were talking to Matt and asking him if he had seen his sister, Vicki. Matt insisted that he had not seen or talked to Vicki since he helped Bonnie send her away and became angry that she even asked him about any of this “ghost stuff” in the first place.
Before Matt stormed off; Bonnie stated that she hoped it was Vicki that was behind Damon’s torture rather that Mason, because the implications as to what Mason being back from the other side (that any number of evil ghosts could come back to terrorize Mystic Falls) were frightening to think about. As Matt stormed away, Bonnie dropped her book of spells, which then automatically opened to a very specific spell: one that dealt specifically with ghosts.
Personally, I have grown weary of Matt’s “flip flopping” behavior on whether or not he wants to be involved or not in everyone’s supernatural problems. Bonnie has also done this a lot. They both have became upset in the past when they are not included, but also seem to bail out when it is convenient for themselves.
“Ghost World” then shifted back to Elena, who was still pressing Jeremy about how to get ahold of Lexi. Invisible Anna was sitting in on the conversation, but insisted to Jeremy that he not tell Elena that she was present. Jeremy silently obeyed Anna’s wish as he convinced his sister that his ghostly girlfriend was not present. Jeremy left the table with the excuse to go inside the restaurant to check his work schedule.
As Jeremy walked off, Stefan arrived on the scene. Stefan was acting just as evil and blood-addicted as ever as he stated that he was excited for the historical festival that night. He even joked that there would be “plenty of people to eat.” Stefan left laughing at how upset the comment made his former girlfriend. After waiting for her former lover to get out of ear-shot, Elena told Alaric that she could not just drop the subject. Elena explained she needed to find a way to speak to Lexi so she could get the old, caring and loving Stefan back.
The episode then returned again to Bonnie and Caroline as they arrived at the old, dilapidated house where Bonnie had resurrected Jeremy (during the Season 2 finale). Caroline was not exactly comfortable with being inside the house where hundreds of witches were gruesomely burnt to death. Bonnie insisted that there was no danger to be found in the century-old residence.
Quickly cutting back to Jeremy, it showed he had walked to the back of the restaurant to talk to Anna. He asked her how the two were able to touch, demanding to know if she was getting help from the witch that had attempted to use Vicki to kill Elena. Anna insisted that she was alone, but Jeremy was still upset. Anna was now upset too as she stated that he should not be talking to her in the first place, which implied guilt for seeing Anna behind Bonnie’s back. Despite his guilt though, Jeremy confessed that his feelings for the ghostly maiden were real and pulled Anna close to give her a long passionate kiss.
We were briefly brought back to Bonnie and Caroline at that point, were us viewers saw that Bonnie had begun the spell that the book had shown her, in hopes that it would send all of the Ghosts (namely Anna) back to the other side.
Then, the show returned back to the Mystic Grill, where Elena and Alaric had just entered to get Jeremy and leave. As Elena went to the back to find Jeremy, Alaric was encountered by Damon. Alaric initially tried to tell Damon off as he said that he was not going to forgive him for snapping his neck in a fit of rage.
Damon assured Alaric that he was well aware that their bromance had come to an end. Damon continued to explain to Alaric that he had approached him not to apologize, but to warn him about Mason Lockwood. “Remember when you did like me and we conspired to kill Uncle Werewolf Mason Lockwood?” Damon said (a line that was delivered amazingly by Ian Somerhalder as usual), “Well I think he’s still a little pissed.”
As Damon was giving his warning to Alaric about the revenge of “Uncle Werewolf,” the episode brought us back to the old witch house, where Bonnie was doing some intense magic. Caroline was still on the scene as she looked on warily at her witchy friend. Bonnie was sitting in the middle of the room, surrounded by candles as she chanted softly yet wildly and was rocking back and forth. Bonnie was calling upon so much power that an unseen gust of wind swirled throughout the room. The camera zoomed in close on Bonnie’s outstretched hands right as the spell reached its’ height. This was shown by the wind becoming fiercer when her chanting got loud and the candles had grown brighter.
It was right then that suddenly a pair of hands appeared out of nowhere and clasped onto Bonnie’s outstretched fingers tightly. The owner of the hands was none other than the ghost of Bonnie’s grandmother, Sheila Bennett (Jasmine Guy) who had died in the show’s first season while attempting a complex spell. Both Bonnie and Caroline were utterly shocked to see the ghostly Grams and neither of them seemed to know exactly what was happening.
“Ghost World” brought us back to the Mystic Grill again where it was discovered Bonnie and Caroline were not the only ones seeing ghosts! First up was Elena! She had walked to the back of the restaurant and stumbled upon Jeremy making out with Anna. Elena was able to see Anna surprisingly!
Next, outside of the restaurant, Stefan was strolling down the sidewalk when suddenly he caught sight of the ghost of Lexi! Finally, catching up to Alaric and Damon as they were sitting at the bar together when suddenly they spot a ghost too! It was Mason Lockwood. Mason approached the pair, took a swig of Damon’s whiskey, and then smashed the glass over the vampire’s head.
As Damon nursed his brand-new head wound, Lexi was outside scolding Stefan for falling off the rails and back into blood-addiction. Stefan, despite having been shocked that he can see his dead friend, told Lexi that he did not want her help and to leave him alone. Lexi responded by smashing his head into the windshield of an SUV, presumably to kidnap him and force him out of his blood-induced haze.
Back at the witch house; Grams told Bonnie that when Jeremy was brought back to life, she had cracked open a doorway to the other side. Grams continued explaining that when Bonnie sent Vicki back to “ghost world,” the Original Witch that had been helping Vicki had taken advantage of the opportunity and had made that crack over to the living side even bigger.
This was what was allowing all the ghosts with unfinished business back into the real world. Caroline called Elena and informed her all of this, as well as telling her that the only way to send the ghosts back and end the witch’s influence was to destroy the witch’s talisman: Elena/Rebekah’s necklace.
Elena agreed to help send the ghosts away and then also told Caroline that she had caught Jeremy kissing Anna. After she had scolded her brother, Elena then ran into Lexi right as she was about to exit the Mystic Grill. Lexi asked Elena to help her “detox” Stefan from his blood addiction. After getting over the initial shock of being able to see yet another ghost, Elena agreed and left with Lexi.
Then, returning back to Damon and Alaric, it was shown that they were questioning Mason about why he was bothering them. Mason told them that he had come back from the other side to kill Klaus (Joseph Morgan) so that his nephew, Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) could be free from his maker’s influence.
Mason said that he knew where to find the weapon that could kill the Original Vampire, but refused to say what it was until Damon apologized for killing him. At first Damon scoffed, but after some prodding from Alaric he relented. Damon apologized as he acknowledged that he really did not have to have killed Mason and that does a lot of things that he “doesn’t have to do.” Mason accepted the apology and then told Damon to meet him alone at the old Lockwood estate in the dungeon where the journey for the weapon would begin.
“Ghost World” cut back to Lexi and Elena, who had brought Stefan to an old and abandoned jail cell deep underground. Lexi had chained Stefan to a chair in the cell. Lexi then explained to Elena that the only way to get Stefan over his blood-lust was to starve it out of him, one day at a time. Stefan, at first, mocked Lexi, but when the ghostly vampire forced her way into his mind, she caused him to have powerful hallucinations that mimic the symptoms of blood starvation. This caused Stefan to become enraged.
On an aside, Lexi is a super fun character. I had not realized how much I had missed her until this episode. Just throwing it out there, but a spin-off show featuring Lexi could be an awesome thing.
As Stefan was being tortured by Lexi, Damon had arrived at the Lockwood dungeon where Mason confessed that there was an old Lockwood family legend about a weapon that could kill an Original Vampire. The legendary weapon could be found deep within a cave behind the wall of the dungeon. Damon broke down the wall and despite initial hesitation, ventured into the cave with Mason Lockwood close behind.
Back at the torture cell with Lexi and Stefan, Elena received a call from Caroline who was distressed that she could not find the necklace and was unable to get a hold of Damon. Elena ignored Caroline’s questions about the necklace and begged her to stop looking for it. Elena wanted Caroline to hold off on sending the ghosts away so that Lexi, a ghost herself, would have time to save Stefan from his “Ripper” ways.
Caroline agreed and said that they would “find the necklace, then choose between boyfriend dramas later.” Bonnie, who had heard the conversation, asked why Caroline referred to “boyfriend dramas” in the plural form. Bonnie was afraid that it had something to do with Jeremy. Caroline sadly confirmed Bonnie’s fears and admitted to her that Elena had walked in on Jeremy kissing Anna. Bonnie was distraught, but Caroline insisted that it does not matter. Once they found the necklace, Caroline told her, the ghosts would be gone for good and Jeremy’s relationship with Anna would end by force.
Meanwhile back at the town square, Jeremy was looking for Anna amidst the historical celebration. He had lost track of her while being scolded by his sister. Jeremy finally managed to find Anna in the middle of the crowd, but was dismayed to see that she was with a rather nasty crowd of ghosts: the tomb vampires from Season 1. The tomb vampire ghosts had returned to the physical world to take revenge on the founding families. Anna and Jeremy (along with the rest of the crowd at the celebration) quickly saw what the tomb vampires meant by “revenge,” when they spot the corpse of Head of the Historical Society, Tobias Fell (Frank Brennan) disemboweled and strung up to a tree.
As chaos erupted at the celebration due to the discovery of the dead body, Lexi and Elena continued to attempt to starve the blood addiction out of Stefan. Elena tried to stay strong, not showing any emotion as Stefan hovered between claiming to love her and then would proclaim that he hated her and thought she was worthless. Lexi told Elena that to save Stefan, she would need to cause him intense pain day in and day out.
Then, Lexi stabbed Stefan with a wooden stake repeatedly. This was when it had became too much for Elena to handle. “I can’t,” Elena said to Lexi, as she stormed out of the cell and out into the town square. Before Elena could get a grip on herself, she saw that the square had descended into chaos and was surrounded by police.
Elsewhere in the square, Jeremy was on the phone with Caroline and was telling her what had just happened concerning the Tomb Vampire Ghosts. Jeremy said that the necklace needed to be found before the Tomb Vampires could do anymore killings. Caroline suggested that perhaps Anna took the necklace, which the vampire ghost denied. When Jeremy told Caroline that he believed that Anna was not lying, Caroline was annoyed and said that he needed to stop blindly trusting Anna and make her tell him the location of the necklace.
Then us viewers were once again brought back inside the cave, where Mason and Damon continued down the trail that led to the weapon. At first, things seemed to be going well for the pair, but the situation quickly took a turn for the worse when suddenly wooden, vervain-covered spikes erupted from the cave walls. The cave had been booby-trapped! Damon was stabbed by them through his midsection.
As Damon cried out for Mason to help him de-impale himself from the spikes, “Ghost World” then cut back again to the craziness that was happening in the town square. Jeremy filled Elena in about the tomb vampire’s murder of Tobias Fell that derailed the celebration. He then confessed to his sister that while he did realize that the ghosts needed to be vanquished, there was a part of him that did not want to as it would also send Anna away.
Jeremy told Elena that he loved Anna and always had and did not want to let her go now that he finally had her back. Rather than responding to Jeremy, Elena talked to Anna directly saying that her brother was “at the beginning of his life. You’re just holding him back. You know that.” Anna reluctantly agreed and finally admitted that she had taken the necklace and had it with her all along.
“Ghost World” returned us to Bonnie and Caroline, who had just received a text from Jeremy that said that he had the necklace and would meet them at the old witch house to give it to them. As they were driving to meet Jeremy, the girls came upon the crashed car of Carol Lockwood. Ms. Lockwood was being attacked by the tomb vampires that must have caused the crash in the first place. Caroline got out of the car and told Bonnie to go ahead without her. Bonnie needed to destroy the necklace as quickly as possible! Caroline held off the tomb vampires from their revenge spree in the meantime.
Back at the town square, Anna confessed to Jeremy that she had taken the necklace to buy herself time to attempt to bring her mother, Pearl (portrayed by Kelly Hu), back from the other side. Anna said that she was scared, because she had no idea where to find her mother and just did not want to be alone. Jeremy promised Anna that he would not let her be alone and then took the necklace. Jeremy rushed over and gave the necklace to Bonnie.
Viewers were then treated to a quick cut back to the torture cell, where Elena told Lexi that she was about to get sent back to the other side along with the rest of the ghosts. It was now official that they were out of time to help Stefan. Desperate to make a connection with Stefan with what little time she had left, Lexi reminded him of the necklace and how it had become a symbol of hope for Stefan. He seemed to agree, but quickly brought up that it did not matter anyways as the necklace was about to be blown to a million pieces.
“Ghost World” then gave us a series of quick cuts, in a sequence that shadowed the initial appearance of all of the ghosts. First, we were brought to the witch house where Jeremy had arrived to give the necklace to Bonnie. Bonnie quickly threw the necklace into the fireplace and began her spell with the help of Grams.
Next, we were shown the Lockwood Cave, where Damon has found that he cannot go any further down the cave and was trapped. Damon had that feeling as if the rest of the cave was someone’s home and that he needed to be invited in since he was a vampire. Mason continued on without him and quickly spotted something important on a wall just out of Damon’s view. Just as Mason was about to tell Damon what this something was, he vanished. Damon was left alone and trapped.
Then, we were shown Lexi back in the torture cell, where she told Elena that there was still hope for Stefan. Sadly, Lexi vanished as Elena told her that she was now ready to help Stefan. Finally, fans were brought back to Anna, who was walking alone down a deserted street. Suddenly, Anna spotted the ghost of her mother on the other side of the street. Mother and daughter ran to each other and as they tearfully embraced, finally happy, they vanished in unison.
Being took back full circle to the witch house, it was shown that the necklace had exploded in the fire place. Grams clasped Bonnie’s hand tightly and told her how proud she was of her. Then, Grams vanished along with the rest of the ghosts. After all of the ghosts vanished, viewers were returned to Damon. Damon had called Alaric to the cave to find out what it was that Mason had found. Alaric was reluctant to help Damon and said that he was still angry with him. Damon apologized to Alaric with the same words he had used to Mason as he said that sometimes he “does things that [he] doesn’t have to do.” Alaric scoffed at getting a “recycled” apology, but when Damon insisted that he actually had meant those words toward the vampire-hunting history teacher all along. The ultimate bromance was back on!
As Alaric and Damon were descending into the cave, on the other side of Mystic Falls, Elena was still in the cell with Stefan. Elena told Stefan that she would not give up on him and that she believed that he could fight past Klaus’s compulsion. Elena expressed to Stefan that she would lose him forever if he could not get past this. Once again to the witch house, Jeremy attempted to apologize to Bonnie. She was not accepting any apologies and simply told Jeremy to leave her alone, to “just go.” Jeremy complied and left the witch house, but was clearly guilt-ridden over how he has hurt Bonnie. Once alone, Bonnie was shocked by an explosion that had erupted from the fireplace. Bonnie looked into the fireplace and she found that the formerly destroyed necklace was once again fully intact! She looked at the necklace with fear having no idea what this now would mean.
The final scene of “Ghost World” was Alaric and Damon shown at the bottom of the cave at the point where Damon could no longer proceed. Alaric walked to where Mason had disappeared and saw what had been found. It was a giant cave painting that depicted a mysterious scene from an ancient past. The episode then cut to black as Alaric admitted that he had “found something,” but had “no idea” what the cave painting meant.
What a crazy, intense episode of The Vampire Diaries! I was unsure of having the dead return at first, but “Ghost World” was nicely done. I was happy to see the Alaric and Damon bromance reunited and beyond thrilled that Bonnie and Jeremy were over. I have never liked them as a couple. The cave painting has me completely baffled! I cannot wait to find out more in the next episode, titled “Ordinary People,” this Thursday at 8pm EST on The CW!
