Welcome back fans of The Vampire Diaries!
The episode “The New Deal” made me sit on the edge of my seat! Not to mention, some romance from that hot and sexy vampire you either love or hate, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder)!
Coming back from a holiday break, The Vampire Diaries mid-season premiere definitely did not disappoint.
In the mid-season finale of The Vampire Diaries “Homecoming”, Damon, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) and Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) set up a plan to lure Klaus (Joseph Morgan) back into town so Mikael (Sebastian Roché) could kill him. Hard choices were made by Elena like having to bury a dagger into Rebekah’s (Claire Holt) back and not to mention trusting Stefan. Elena felt much guilt over putting a dagger in Rebekah’s back but she knew that it had to be done.
The homecoming dance was ruined so it was moved to the Lockwood estate. Klaus showed up with all his hybrids. Knowing something was up, Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) drugged Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) and had Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) remove her from the property. Basically, Klaus had all his hybrids there for one reason only. If Klaus were to die, the hybrids were to kill everyone there. Just as Damon was about to kill Klaus, Stefan stops him.
This gave Klaus the chance to kill Mikael! The only one they knew who could kill an original. Everyone was shocked that Stefan stopped Damon from killing Klaus. However, Klaus finally gave Stefan the freedom from his compulsion that he had been wanting for so long. Free from his compulsion, Stefan and Katherine (Nina Dobrev) are leaving town and Katherine convinced Stefan to get angry and exact revenge on Klaus. As the episode ended Klaus found out that Stefan had taken his family from him.
It may appear in this episode that the show was focused on the romantic relationships between its various characters, but it proved to be the family connection that stood out. The Gilbert family had much to deal with in The New Deal. Elena was dealing with a very angry Klaus and it seemed that Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) was reverting back to his season one character. Being somewhat rebellious Jeremy invited Tyler into their home to eat. Nothing scarier than having a dangerous hybrid werewolf/vampire in your home. I love watching Alaric Saltzman’s (Matthew Davis) clumsy attempt at parenting Jeremy.
Klaus would stop at nothing to get his family back. Believing that Elena knew where Stefan was, Klaus compelled Jeremy to walk in the middle of the road and stand where he had compelled his hybrid to run him down. Elena and Alaric run outside just in time for Alaric to jump in front of the moving car and shove Jeremy out of the way. Alaric suffered massive internal injures but never fear, he had his ring on! Klaus believed that if he let Elena know that he would kill her family she would tell him where Stefan was. Elena however had no idea where Stefan was.
Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) went to the witch’s house even though they were still unhappy with her. Sensing something was different Bonnie looks around. Bonnie was not expecting to find Stefan there. The witch’s hate vampires. I wonder how Stefan got into the house? Either way, Stefan asked Bonnie to help him hide Klaus’s family in the old house. Not sure how she was going to do that Bonnie agreed. Of course, Stefan had to explain himself on why he did what he did when he saved Klaus. He explained to Bonnie that had Klaus died then all the hybrids had orders to kill Damon. Stefan had saved his brothers life.
Klaus went to the Salvatore house looking for Stefan and found Damon. At first I thought it would be a bloody confrontation but it only turned out to be a verbal smashing on whose siblings betray them the most. Damon did not seem to be intimidated by Klaus at all. That was a good thing. We all know that when Klaus figures out your weakness he goes for the throat. Elena’s weakness was the fear for her family which Klaus confirmed by his phone call which put Jeremy in the way of a moving vehicle. Point taken!
Tyler showed up at Klaus’s to talk to him about what he had just done. Klaus informed him that it was human guilt he was feeling and that he would have to get over that. Damon arrived at the Gilbert house to check on Alaric. Luckily, Alaric had on his ring. Jeremy had removed his bracelet that protected him from compulsion and Damon noticed it. Tyler removed it so Klaus could compel him. Jeremy declared that all of them should get out of Mystic Falls before they all die.
Elena called Bonnie and told her that Klaus was looking for four coffins like he was in her dream. Bonnie immediately told Elena to not get involved. When Elena told Bonnie that Klaus almost killed Jeremy, she could not help but tell Elena she knew where Stefan and the coffins were. Damon and Elena go to the witch’s house to talk to Stefan. Damon could not enter because his ring did not work in the witches house. Seemed they were still angry at him. Elena decided to face Stefan by herself. Stefan said giving back the options was not an option and that it was not his problem that Klaus was trying to kill Jeremy. Needless to say their conversation ended with Elena slapping Stefan in the face.
Damon sent Elena back to the Gilbert house to tend to Jeremy and said he would take care of his brother. Damon entered the house in vampire-stealth mode as fast as he could to the basement where he found Stefan. Damon told his brother they needed to talk and drug him outside of the house where he grabbed a stick and drove it into Stefan’s stomach.
Damon told him it was because he ruined his plans to kill Klaus. When asked why, Stefan said “piece by piece Klaus took everything from me and I am doing the same thing to him”. Stefan then confessed to Damon that he did it to save him. That Klaus had given orders to the hybrids to kill Damon if anything should happen to him. Finally a side of Stefan we have not seen this season.
Jeremy feeling betrayed by Tyler held a crossbow to his back. Tyler explained to Jeremy that all Klaus wanted was his family back. Jeremy shot an arrow at Tyler but he caught it. He told Tyler that every time Klaus wanted something, someone ended up dead. Tyler warned Jeremy to get home before dark and stay inside because Klaus was not going to stop until he got his coffins back. Tyler still stays on the fence as either good or bad.
Elena returned home just as Alaric was waking up. He asked how Jeremy was and she told him fine just hating her, hating life, and hating the fact that they cannot even get through dessert without someone getting killed. Normally Alaric would be fine after coming back from the dead because of his ring. However, this time he starts coughing up blood. Elena called 911 and when the paramedics arrived, one of Klaus’s hybrids showed up and compelled them to leave. As they left Jeremy shot the hybrid and then cut off its head. This startled and saddened Elena that her 16 year old brother had to live this way. They both took Alaric to the emergency room to get him fixed.
Damon and Stefan discuss why he saved Klaus. Damon said it could not be just to save him. Maybe Stefan had an off/of switch on his brotherly love. Stefan told Damon he stole the coffins because his love for his family was the one weakness that he could use against Klaus. Damon told Stefan that he could not be using them to kill Klaus because there was only one way to kill Klaus and Stefan blew that when he killed Mikael. Stefan told Damon he was wrong because Klaus does not get to live forever. Damon said he wanted in on the plan but Stefan said he did not need his help. Telling Stefan that he was not cut throat and devious that he would need his help so Stefan agreed. He just wanted Elena left out of it. Stefan took Damon to the cellar where the coffins were. At first glance Damon did not see them but Stefan told him to look again and then they were there. Stefan explained that the witches spirits hated klaus just as much as they did. The witches were using their spells to hide the coffins from Klaus.
Alaric wakes up at the hospital feeling much better. The doctor saw Alaric putting on his shoes and wonders how he could even be standing after sustaining such an injury. When asked he said he felt better. The doctor asked him did he have a guardian angel or sell his soul to the devil. Alaric replied “a little of both”.
Elena took matters into her own hands by summoning Klaus to the Salvatore estate. When he arrived he asked had she found Stefan. Elena told him no but she had something else. She took him down to where Rebekah was. You could almost see the pain on Klaus’s face. Elena gave Klaus Rebekah so he would spare her brother. Klaus said that was a fair enough exchange. She could consider Jeremy spared.
Elena did tell him that she was the one that put the dagger in Rebekah’s back and that when she woke up she will probably come after her. Klaus told Elena that he could control his sister. As he pulled the dagger out of Rebekah he reminded Elena that she had a huge supply of friends and family that could end up dead if she did not find Stefan.
Elena told him that Stefan no longer cared about her and that he was now Klaus’s problem. She also said that she was not the only one that Rebekah wanted dead. Elena told Klaus that Rebekah knew what he did to their mother. After Elena left Klaus put the dagger back into Rebekah. Smart choice!
Jeremy and Alaric left the hospital and Jeremy told Alaric that he had Damon’s blood to thank for him being alive. Alaric asked Jeremy was he ok. Seemed that Alaric was trying to be that parent figure for Jeremy. He said that he was ok and that this was just the way things were and it sucked.
Back at the Gilbert house Elena and Damon were cleaning up the mess from where Jeremy killed the hybrid. Elena was very upset that Jeremy had to chop off someone’s head because he was only 16 years old. Damon told her that things would be fine. Upstairs they talk to Jeremy and Damon compelled him to leave Mystic Falls and go to Denver to stay with family. He told him he would go to a new school and make new friends. As hard as it was for Elena to hear Damon told Jeremy that he would leave Mystic Falls and never think twice about it or coming back.
Bonnie showed Stefan the coffin that was in her dreams. Stefan told her that it was no use because the coffin would not open. Sure that the witches put that coffin in her dream for her to open it, Bonnie decides to come up with something to get the coffin open. I am so excited to see who is in the coffin. Can they kill Klaus? Was it his mother or his brother?
With the episode coming to an end, Elena felt bad for having Damon compel Jeremy. She could not help but remember what happened last time Damon compelled him. Either way, Jeremy would be safe and not dead. If he did find out he was compelled he would get over it just like last time. Damon told Elena that Jeremy was so lucky to have her as a sister.
Elena thanked Damon and told him that she could not have done any of it without him. Feeling guilty he told Elena that Stefan did not screw them over he actually stepped in to save Damon and then stole the coffins to get even. Elena did not understand what it all meant but Damon told her it meant that it meant he had to feel guilty for wanting what he wanted.
Just as I thought Damon was gonna walk off and leave Elena standing on the porch he turned around and said “no, if I am going to feel guilty about something I am going to feel guilty about this”. Then the one thing “Delena” fans have been waiting for. Damon kissed Elena! Finally. The chemistry between these two cannot be ignored.
