Welcome back fans of The Vampire Diaries,
In this weeks episode, Before Sunset, we got to see an even bigger and badder side of Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis). Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) was nearly drained of all her blood and finally the Salvatore brothers got to revel in the victory that they had rid the world of Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan)!
Abbey Bennett Wilson (Persia White) came back this episode to help her daughter. Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) nearly met her maker and Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) finally stood up to Klaus. Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) proved that he would go to any length to save his family.
Before continuing my review, we include the promotional trailer for this weeks exciting Season Finale of The Vampire Diaries “The Departed” courtesy of the CW Network!
Before Sunset:
Before we get too far into this weeks episode I want to recap a little of what happened in last week’s episode, Do Not Go Gentle. Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt) worked so hard on the dance that had a theme from the roaring 20’s. I loved the costumes in that episode.
Nina Dobrev looked stunning in her dress and I can see why the Salvatore brothers are fighting for her attention. Elena made an effort to bond with Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) by inviting him to the dance. Of course like with any episode, no public event in Mystic Falls can go without a big bang! Wondering what the big bang was? It was the fact that Esther turned Alaric’s vampire hunting alter ego into the ultimate weapon, a vampire!
Before Sunset introduced the new fully equipped vampire hunter, Alaric. Alaric was imprisoned in the school by the sunlight unaware that Caroline and Rebekah were in the building. Caroline entered the cafeteria to find the only other person to help clean was Rebekah.
After snide comments were exchanged, Rebekah left the cafeteria only to have Alaric attack her. Caroline saved Rebekah from Alaric and they both fled the school. Caroline ending up not being the lucky one as Alaric broke her neck and drug her back into the school.
Elena and Jeremy were remodeling a room when Stefan showed up. Jeremy asked “Are you guys like back together or something?” Jeremy pleaded can you just give us one day with out any vampires and he left the room.
Elena told Stefan he did not mean it, but Stefan disagreed. Stefan left the room to get the door soon after the doorbell rang. When he answered the door on the other side was Damon supporting Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham).
At the Mikaelson house, Rebekah tried to tell Klaus that Alaric was not dead, but a vampire with an undestructible stake that could kill any vampire but himself. Rebekah told Klaus as soon as the sun goes down Alaric will be after them. She also said they needed to leave right away.
Klaus told Rebekah he was not leaving without Elena. He wanted to make a hybrid army to protect them. Rebekah said he could leave with her then or be on his own. With all of that, Rebekah walked out alone.
Stefan, Damon, and Bonnie were all talking about how Alaric is a vampire. Bonnie explained she had no idea what was happening that the witches led her there. They wanted him to feed so he would turn. Bonnie and Damon were quarreled up because Alaric had a white oak stake that could wipe out a whole bloodline. Bonnie told them there had to be a reverse spell. Witches can not make immortal creatures.
Elena received a call from Alaric. All that time she believed Alaric was dead. When she answered the phone she said “Who ever this is, it’s not funny.” To her surprise Alaric answered “Listen closely, I’m at the school. I have Caroline. And if you want to keep her alive I need you to get in your car and come down here right away. If you tell anyone where you are going, I will kill her.” I could not believe that Alaric would speak to Elena that way.
Jeremy walked down the stairs when the doorbell rang. Once he opened the door, he was angry at the sight of Klaus and said, “What the hell are you doing here?” The Salvatore brothers arrived at the door to find that Klaus had come to collect Elena. Klaus word always has a way with words. So, when he said “I need to pick up a few road trip necessities, a spare tire, a flashlight, doppelganger,” I could not help but laugh. Damon shut the door and they went looking for Elena. She was nowhere to be found.
Klaus was irritated as he looked through the windows. He threw a newspaper, a ball, and parts of a fence at Damon and Stefan. The way the music started and Klaus breaking down the door was all too comical. I loved it! Stefan received a phone call from Alaric, who informed Stefan that he had Elena and Caroline and would kill them both if Klaus did not surrender himself.
At the school, Alaric was torturing Caroline in attempt to teach Elena how to kill a vampire. He dipped a wash cloth in verbain to wrap it around her mouth. To see Caroline in tears and so much pain, Elena begged Alaric to stop. Alaric tried to hand Elena the white oak stake because wanted her to kill Caroline. I do not know what I would have done in Elena’s position.
Bonnie and Damon were waiting for Abby. Bonnie assured Damon Abby would show up because she told James to tell Abby it was urgent. The doorbell rang in a matter of seconds. It was an awkward moment for Bonnie because of the way Abby had left. Assuring Abby that she only needed help with the spell, Bonnie let her in. Abby was confused on how she could enter the home without being invited. Bonnie told her that it was because only vampires lived there.
Abby told Bonnie in order to stop Alaric’s heart she would have to stop a human heart. Damon tried to take the ring from Jeremy but he insisted it was his sister and he would be the one to let Bonnie do the spell and stop his heart. It was interesting to see Bonnie’s reaction.
The feelings between the two are still there. After settling who would wear the ring Bonnie had Klaus, Damon, and Stefan drink her blood because it would link them all together.
Alaric was trying to provoke Elena to kill Caroline. He told Elena her parents would not be proud of her because she is protecting vampires. However, Elena untied her and yelled “run”. Caroline ran but she did not get far until she ran into Klaus. Shocked to see him there, he told her they would save Elena and to go straight home and stay inside. That moment when Caroline’s eyes met Klaus’s was to be remembered. He had an endearing look on his face towards her.
Alaric was throwing Elena all over the hallway for letting Caroline go. He threatened to kill her and when she screamed for him to do it he let her go.
A few seconds later the Salvatore brothers were holding Alaric’s arms to keep him still. Of course our new super weapon got the best of Damon and Stefan. Klaus immediately swooped in and put his hand on Alaric to give Bonnie a connection!
Bonnie and Jeremy were in the woods when Bonnie felt the connection between Klaus, and Alaric. She put her hand over Jeremy and started the spell. As soon as it started Alaric broke Klaus’s hand threw him to the ground, and Bonnie lost the connection. Alaric threw Klaus all over the hallway and got him down to stake him.
Elena showed up with a knife against her neck threatening to kill herself if Klaus was not let go. When Alaric told Elena to put the knife down she said “Why because you still need me alive?”
Elena figured out that Esther Mikaelson (Alice Evans) used her to make Alaric because Esther did not want Alaric to be immortal. If Elena died Alaric died with her. Alaric told Elena she was wrong so Elena started to cut her neck and Alaric out of fear yelled “stop!” Klaus got away.
Elena woke up strapped to a chair with a nurse inserting a needle into her vein. Klaus informed her that he was draining all of her blood.
Tyler walked in and Klaus ordered him to leave and fetch him more blood bags, and forget about Elena. At the school Alaric ordered Stefan and Damon to get up.
He told them Klaus was going to kill Elena. Stefan told Alaric Elena was the last person he would kill do to the fact he needs her blood to make hybrids.
Elena told Klaus he would need more blood than she has to makes hybrids. Klaus said his mother tried to kill his siblings she strengthen the bond between them. He doesn’t need hybrids he has family. Elena told him he just wanted a back up family, because his family will never trust him again. Klaus in return told Elena that she is coming in between Damon and Stefan and if he killed her their family would stay in tacked. Then says “ Between us girls, who would you have picked.” I love Klaus!
Klaus left Elena to die, Elena was getting more weak and she could do nothing but watch her blood drain. Tyler showed up and started untiyng her. When she looked up there was a very angry Klaus watching. Tyler got up and showed his sire bond has been broken. Tyler then told Klaus how he broke the bond for Caroline. Klaus said it was impossible, but Tyler went on telling him real love was stronger than fake loyalty. Go Tyler!
Klaus pend Tyler against the wall about to kill him. Tyler broke his hand, and Stefan and Damon ran up and held on to Klaus. Stefan placed his hand over Klaus’s heart and Klaus turned defenseless. The look on Klaus’s face when his heart was slowing down was morbid. Klaus fell to the ground and died. I do not think I have ever been so sad about any character dying.
Bonnie, done with the spell tried to bring Jeremy back to life. When he did not come back to life quickly Bonnie started screaming “Jeremy!”. She was afraid she had killed him. Bonnie started beating on Jeremy’s chest about to cry. Jeremy gasped for air and Bonnie held him. They looked into each others eyes. I knew at that moment their love was forever.
Stefan and Damon drove Elena home. Damon told her they were going to walk her all the way to the door, because she lost a lot of blood, and the sun will be down soon letting Alaric roam the streets. Elena tells them he can not hurt her to worry about themselves. Stefan told her he will call her when they get back. Before they left Elena told them she knew she was being selfish. She does not want to pick one of them and lose the other.
Elena got into her house only to see all of her friends throwing a victory party. Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) told them he was a little pissed he was not invited to take down an original. Tyler says he would have taken you right down to the hospital, and Matt replied “Please i’m more stealth than that. I’m like a ninja.” Elena thanked Tyler for standing up to Klaus the way he did. Everyone at the small party grabbed a drink a cheered to their Klaus free life.
Sheriff Liz Forbes (Marguerite Maclntyre) showed up at Carol Lockwood (Susan Walters) house thinking she was the one who called an emergency council meeting. Carol informed Sheriff Liz that it was Alaric who put the meeting together. Alaric said he was just telling the council about the vampire problem.
He informed the whole council how Sheriff Liz has a vampire as a daughter, and Carol has a son who is half vampire half werewolf. Liz tried to leave and Alaric demanded that she sit down.
Stefan and Damon were on the way to the Atlantic ocean when Damon makes the joke “How many desecrated hybrids does it take to screw in a light bulb.” Stefan noticed Damon was in a very good mood. Damon told Stefan he was happy because his brother was half way sane, and Klaus was dead. The topic of Elena comes up. Stefan and Damon discussed what they would do if Elena chose one or the other. The brothers decided that if Elena chose one the other would leave Mystic Falls.
Jeremy and Elena share bonding time and talked about what would happen with Alaric. Jeremy told Elena he was not willing to lose her just to get rid of Alaric.
If she died then Alaric would die. Jeremy left the room and Elena started painting. Some normalcy had come back to the Gilbert household.
As the episode came to an end, Elena was painting and suddenly passed out. She was left lying in paint and bleeding from the nose. I cannot wait till next week to find out what exactly happened to Elena.
