Welcome back fans of The Vampire Diaries!
This week’s season finale was full of twist and turns and ended in a bang! Out of every season finale I watched this week, The Vampire Diaries season finale “The Departed” was by far the best. I was in shock the entire episode.
We got to see some familiar faces that have been gone since last season and a couple of faces that we have never seen. This episode took the fans back to Elena Gilbert’s (Nina Dobrev) time with her parents. Most shows when jumping back and forth between time lines can get confusing but not The Vampire Diaries. Excellent job done by the writers.
In last week’s episode “Before Sunset”, Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) seemed to be the center of attention. First showing up at the Gilbert house trying to get to Elena and then showing up at the school to rescue Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) and Elena from Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis). Even though he was successful in saving Caroline and Elena, in the end, the Salvatore brothers working with Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) and Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) created a link that put an end to Klaus. At the end of “Before Sunset” Elena passed out and appeared to have blood coming from her nose.
As a Klaus fan this was very hard for me to watch. I could not imagine the show without Joseph Morgan. He is such a talented actor. I recently watched a movie with Joseph Morgan called Angels Crest. He co starred with Thomas Dekker who plays Adam on The Secret Circle. If you have not watched this movie it is a must see! I was very impressed. Here is the trailer for Angels Crest.
Our episode opened with a very happy Elena waking up to “So What” by Pink. This confused me a little because of the way last week’s episode ended. Elena ran down stairs in her cheer leading outfit and ran into Aunt Jenna Sommers (Sara Canning)! I have to admit, I miss Sara Canning on The Vampire Diaries.
I personally got to meet her at last year’s Dragon con and she is an awesome lady. It was good to see them bring her back for the finale. Even if it was for a glimpse into Elena’s past. We got to see Elena’s interactions with her parents this episode as well.
Alaric showed up at the hospital to pick up Elena and inform Dr. Meredith Fell (Torrey DeVitto) that he had found her vampire blood stash and was getting her medical license revoked. It seemed
Alaric was putting an end to the vampire controlled town leaders of Mystic Falls by having Liz Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) removed as Sheriff and Carolyn Lockwood (Susan Walters) removed from being town Mayor. What Alaric did not know was that Caroline, Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino), Jeremy and Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) had picked up Elena from the hospital earlier.
After getting Elena home Caroline is smothering her making sure she is OK. She actually offered to make Elena a tea with some vodka in it. Do our teens of Mystic Falls have something they are not telling us? I thought it funny to add a little bit of “normal” teen debaucheries in a show where NORMAL is not in the script.
Going back into the past in this episode was great. We actually got to see our teens living a normal life pre-vampire/werewolf. Elena as a cheerleader! Caroline getting on Elena’s nerves was classic Caroline. The Caroline that personally, I miss. Getting to see Elena and Matt together was nice also.
Elena awoke to Matt sitting next to her watching her sleep. When asked what she was dreaming about she told him “Sophomore year”. Elena apologized to Matt for stringing him along and told him that she should have been up front with him on what she wanted.
She felt she was doing the same thing to Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). A knock at the door proved to be a visitor that Elena was all to eager to see, Stefan!
Elena felt over-coddled with Matt and Stefan both taking care of her. After leaving the room Elena called for Stefan and when he walked into the foyer he saw Elijah Mikaelson (Daniel Gillies) standing at the door with Elena. I love Elijah!
My thought is Elijah started the Salvatore bloodline instead of Klaus.
Alaric found Jeremy at the grill and convinced Jeremy to find out where they were hiding Klaus’s body. He said that Elena could not seem to rid her life of vampires so he would do it for her. Jeremy has always wanted the vampires out of his and Elena’s life so he reluctantly agreed.
Elijah made a deal with Elena that if they would tell him where Klaus’s body was they would take the white oak stake away from Alaric and the Mikaelson family will scatter with Alaric following them. Elijah seems so trustworthy.
However, he has broke his deals with Elena in the past so I can see why she found it hard this episode to trust him. Of course, Damon was on the cell phone listening to the conversation and told them they must be out of their mind. With the final decision left up to Elena she agreed to help Elijah.
Tyler and Caroline were called home by their moms. Liz told the two that Alaric had outed them to the council. The council knew what Caroline and Tyler were. They had gathered up enough money to give them so they could leave Mystic Falls and be safe.
Caroline was hesitant but soon became happy as she realized that her and Tyler would be together forever. They planned to meet up two hours later and kissed each other goodbye.
Jeremy and Matt discussed Alaric’s offer. It would only seem right they would both want Elena out of town and away from the vampires. Jeremy did not know where Klaus’s body was but Matt did. They called Alaric and told him where he could find Klaus. I really do not want Klaus to die. I love his character. He brings a little bit of bad to the show just like Katherine Pierce.
Damon and Bonnie were at the storage unit where they had Klaus’s body. Damon of course was in a bad mood because of the choice Elena had made. His humor shined through as he was walking and complaining about her choices. Bonnie asked him which unit Klaus was in and he said “I was gonna use unit 666 but I figured that would be too obvious”. Damon’s funny remarks is a much needed tension breaker in the show. Damon described what was in storage unit 1020 saying “one jerky-fried original”.
Bonnie opened the coffin and there was Klaus. He looked dead but then he opened his eyes. Damon said “creepy”. I agreed Damon! Bonnie wanted a moment alone with Klaus. It was to say the things she had been wanting to say to him for a long time. Having him in that state she was able to say it. I did not blame her. I would be angry too if someone had put my friends and family through what Klaus had put the residents of Mystic Falls through.
Stefan and Elena had some alone time up stairs at the Gilbert house. Elena was afraid for Jeremy and said that every time someone left the house she was afraid that they were not going to make it back. Stefan promised her that he would do everything in his power to make sure everyone made it home safe. Elena wanted to tell him something but told him they could talk later. Just as it appeared Stefan was leaving the room he turned around and kissed her. He told her “just in case there is no later”. Stelena fans I am sure were happy.
Damon and Stefan were on the phone talking about what to do once they get the dagger. Damon heard the elevator and thought it was Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt). When he came out and called for her Alaric grabbed him from behind and asked him which locker Klaus was in. Damon was not going to tell him. Alaric broke his neck and left him lying there dead. Poor Damon is always getting his neck broken.
Elena and Matt shared feelings mid way through the episode. Elena knew that if she had to chose, she would have to say goodbye to one of them. She did not want to lose anyone else. My decision would be easy, Damon! I was yelling it at the TV. She loved Stefan but said when she was around Damon he consumed her.
Elena told Matt that she wished that her mother were there for advice and she flashed back to her conversation with her mother about a fight she had with Matt their Sophomore year. Her mother told her it would be setting him free. Suddenly, Elena awoke in Matt’s truck. She realized that Matt had drugged her and drove her out of town. He explained that him and Jeremy could get her away from vampires.
Alaric was really frustrated opening up every single storage unit. He heard the elevator open and heard Rebekah calling for Damon. Halfway down Damon grabbed Rebekah from behind and covered her mouth where she could not scream. They took Klaus out of unit 1020 and Alaric caught them. He opened the coffin and drove the stake into Klaus. I cried! Damon told Rebekah to run and he started fighting Alaric.
Damon had to call Stefan and break the bad news to him that Alaric had staked Klaus. Neither one felt bad but it did take at least an hour before Sage started feeling sick. Stefan told Damon that it was a shame that he would not be able to say his goodbyes to Elena. Damon told him to say goodbye from the both of them. Even at a time like this, Damon found his humor and told Stefan to call him if he coughed up a lung. With both brothers saying goodbye to each other, Caroline and Elijah ran up and heard the bad news. The first thing on Caroline’s mind was Tyler and to try and find him.
Jeremy had called Matt to tell him the news. Elena insisted that they turn around and go back to Mystic Falls. Elena was worried with Klaus dead that Stefan and Damon would soon follow. Matt told Elena that Damon was not in Mystic Falls that he was 100 miles out of town. He could either keep driving to Damon or turn around and go back to Stefan in Mystic Falls. Here came the time for Elena to make her decision. As a Delena fan I was yelling at the television “Damon”!
Elena made a tearful phone call to Damon and said her goodbyes. She let him know that she was going back to Stefan. I cried this entire phone call. This whole episode was so emotional. It was hard watching Elena make her decision to tell Damon goodbye.
Knowing that he was going to die. Elena told Damon had she met him first then maybe. As Damon hung up the phone he turned around and saw Alaric.
He was not very happy!
Caroline ran to the cave where here and Tyler were to meet looking for him. She was frantic. When Tyler showed up she hugged him and told him that Klaus was dead. Tyler knew that this meant he was going to die. He hugged Caroline and told her he was going to be OK. Tyler told Caroline to tell his mom that he left town like they had planned.
He started feeling strange and asked Caroline did she feel anything. He knew he was changing and asked Caroline to leave because he did not want her to watch him die. She refused but he started turning and scared her away.
Rebekah found Elijah and told him that Klaus was dead. Tyler Lockwood was dead but Elijah could not figure out why the Salvatore brothers were not dead since they were part of Klaus’s bloodline. Elijah knew something was not right. Bonnie entered the cave and said “I know you are here”. Out waked Tyler! I was shocked. I thought Tyler was dead. When she addressed him she called him Klaus. OK so this is when I almost passed out. My beloved Klaus was not dead. Bonnie must have switched them with a spell and it was actually Tyler that Alaric had staked. Why would Bonnie do that to Tyler? I am guessing it was to save her mother and her friends.
Rebekah called Stefan and told him that there was no deal. She said she had spent her whole life running and she was tired of running. Rebekah said that she was going to get rid of Alaric. Now we all know her easiest way of getting rid of Alaric is to get rid of Elena since they were connected. No! Not Elena too. I could not stand to lose another beloved character. The closer it got to the end the more my jaw hung open.
Matt and Elena were on their way back to Mystic Falls when Rebekah showed up in the middle of the road causing Matt to run his truck off the bridge and into the water below. As the truck was filling up with water Elena was remembering her wreck with her parents. It was a touching moment between her and her father when she looked at her dad and mother “I love you”.
Stefan swam down and pulled Elena from the wreckage. Just like what happened years ago, Stefan showed up to save Elena and Matt. Elena would not let him take her first. She insisted to Stefan that he take Matt first. He took Matt leaving Elena to drown.
Damon was getting practically killed with Alaric killing him slowly. He was really taking a beating. As he is lying there he remembered the first time he met Elena. She was on the phone talking with Bonnie. They ran into each other and met. Elena actually did meet Damon first! Delena fans were so happy because I know I was. However, Damon compelled Elena not to remember meeting him.
As Elena was slowly dying in the truck Damon noticed that Alaric was starting to die. Damon knew right away it was because Elena was dead. He cried saying “you are not dead”. Jeremy walked down the stairs and at the bottom her saw Alaric. He realized it was Alaric and not his vampire hating alter ego.
Alaric told him that he would always be there for him watching over him. A touching goodbye from the Alaric that we all loved. Jeremy realized with Alaric dead that must mean that his sister was dead.
The last scene of this episode was so sad. Elena was lying on a slab dead. For all of us who love Elena this was heart wrenching. I had already been crying the past half hour. Stefan was standing over her. I am sure he felt guilt. Damon showed up at the hospital and Meredith stopped him.
She told him that Elena’s injuries were much worse than she had initially thought. She had a cerebral hemorrhage. Meredith told Damon that Elena needed her help and she had given her vampire blood. The look on Damon’s face! A few seconds left in the show and the camera was back on Elena lying there dead on the table until she took in a deep breath and sat up!
I cannot wait till September to find out what they have in store for Elena. Looks like there is a new vampire in Mystic Falls. What type of vampire will Elena be? Will she be like her look alike Katherine? Will she remember that she met Damon first since she is no longer under his compulsion? There is still hope for us Delena fans yet. Until next season fans! The CW has given us all something to look forward to in the fall.

Dragonbayne (Angela)
Hi Angie,
Wow! What an exquisite review and analysis of the season three finale “The Departed”. Great job! I myself was shocked at the revelations for “Delena” fans with a blow dealt at the expense of “Stelena” fans!
What is going to happen in season four? How can they go on? Will Stelena fans ever recover now that we know about Elena? The next season is certainly going to be an epic event!
Thank you for an outstanding review of “The Departed”!
Best Regards,
Kenn
Thank you Kenn. I know Stelena fans are unhappy. I was is shock the entire finale. So many surprises. Looking forward to season 4.
Didn’t Caroline remember everything that Damon compelled her to or get after she was killed by Katherine? If so,that would make Elena remember her and Damon’s first meeting.
Yes it would and I am so excited. #stillhavehope for #Delena fans! Thank you
