Yesterday news broke that Sanctuary will not be returning for a fifth season on Syfy, Space Channel or apparently anywhere else for that matter in 2013 as hoped.
Amanda Tapping, Robin Dunne, Ryan Robbins, Agam Darshi, and Gillian Horvath of Sanctuary Series officially broke the news to fans on twitter after an interloper leaked the information.
A great many Sanctuary fans were upset that the leak even occurred. Subsequently thousands throughout the world shared their condolences to the show, to the cast, and to the crews.
Amanda Tapping then tweeted:
“To all the fans of @SanctuarySeries we love and adore you. Thank you for the love and support. Now to the long dark tea time of my soul. ” After a couple of hours, she then tweeted this- “Wow! And wow! You guys are amazing. Your tweets are a great lift to my soul. Onward and upward!!! Xoxoxo”
A prime example of the power of fandom in my opinion. Thank you Sanctuary fans for your never-ending support, as well as to the amazing cast and crew of Sanctuary.
Back Story:
Show Patrol tweeted a fragment of a sentence at approximately 3:07 PM EST. No official reference was provided by him or any other person(s) at that time about who did the leaking. This wonton act clearly blind-sided everyone who had ever been involved with Sanctuary.
Only a cryptic fragment was provided via the tweet. At the time in question, unethical “Yellow Journalism” was apparently the order of the day since no official word had been released from the network. Nor were the series creators considered. The creators well deserved respect was clearly usurped. They were professionally violated by the use of such dubious tactics.
Below is the official statement from Syfy President Mark Stern dated May 21, 2012 as provided to our managing editor via Syfy Public Relations shortly after the shameful leak occurred.
“Syfy’s Sanctuary will not be returning for a fifth season, making the recently-aired fourth season its final, it was confirmed today by Mark Stern, President, Syfy Original Content and Co-Head, Universal Cable Productions.”
“We’re honored to have been part of this incredible series. What To Be Thankful For:
(portions written by Mike)
From an effort that started off as a web series in 2007, Sanctuary has truly became “the little show that did.” For four seasons it has always delivered top quality entertainment, fun, adventure, and a great element of science fiction. All of that has been made possible by the amazing cast and crew of this wonderful show that has become beloved by so many worldwide. The show never lacked talent, in front or behind the camera.
Consider the acting talent involved: Amanda Tapping, Robin Dunne, Ryan Robbins, Christopher Heyerdahl, Agam Darshi, Emilie Ullerup, Jonathon Young, Robert Lawrenson, Pascale Hutton, Ian Tracey, Lynda Boyd, Shaker Paleja, Peter Wingfield, Jim Byrnes, Christine Chatelain, Chuck Campbell, Paul McGillion, Brian Markinson, Callum Blue, Mandy May, Matty Finochio, Mig Macario, Carlo Rota, Françoise Yip, Jody Thompson, Pauline Egan, Aliyah O’Brien, Gil Bellows, Adam Greydon Reid, Caroline Cave, Al Sapienza, Chris Gauthier, Polly Walker, Kavan Smith, Vincent Gale, Tom McBeath, Sandrine Holt, Kurt Evans, Zak Santiago, and many more.
A big thank you shout out goes to the amazing creators and crews who made Sanctuary Series a success. I will be back with more news soon to keep you updated with information that is not leaked.
Editors Notes: Thank you to everyone at Syfy Public Relations for responding very quickly yesterday to our request and providing verified information.
Of concern to everyone, except of course those that whom leaked the information, is that the people involved with Sanctuary Series as a whole were not even provided a modicum of courtesy to be allowed to make the announcement themselves. A similar situation recently occurred with Alcatraz and Eureka where news of their cancellation was leaked even before the creators could share the news with the cast and crews.
In fact many “entertainment news organization insiders” make such reprehensible conduct their Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). They become the very Paparazzi they claim to abhor by failing to conduct themselves with proper decorum. We find such behavior to be inappropriate at best. It is just wrong for news organizations to blind-side anyone. Such organizations should instead; 1). internalize ethical behavior, and 2). demonstrate consideration to cast and crews by notifying them first, then publish their articles.
In contrast, we here at WHR wait to receive official confirmation before responding to leaked “Yellow Journalism” news. Moreover we quote the source of the news when provided with same. Otherwise we offer no information without confirmation. Instead after conference with our team leaders and senior members, reaching out to those who are blind-sided by such leaks is the right thing to do in every such circumstance.
We believe there is an ethical lesson to be (re)learned in the news business, entertainment news business lack of ethics notwithstanding. The rush to leak something without the slightest consideration to all of the people who create and are involved in a project is unethical behavior clearly beyond the pale. The person or persons involved with leaks should be severely disciplined by the entertainment networks in our opinion.

Hi Mike,
An outstanding report with facts of what happened yesterday. Very happy to help out. Looking forward to your next article in the Sanctuary Saga. Thank you.
Best Regards,
Kenn
Hmmm. I was AWOL from Twitter for most of the day yesterday save a couple of texts I sent when @SanctuarySeries tweeted. Needless to say, I didn’t catch how it all came about. Interesting indeed.
Hi,
I am very sad about Sanctuary. I cried for nearly a day. I like Syfy and think it was not their fault. I do not like those tweets and Facebook posts slamming Syfy. Those people needed to be more polite, because we know now that the Beedie Group made the decision.
But I just read your article and you are right.
Syfy said they would announce the news first one way or the other on Twitter, last December I think. It is obvious Syfy did not make the announcement until almost four hours after it was leaked, so I agree with the use of the words leaked and interloper, meaning someone other than the network who said they would announce it first. That is the way it should have been done in the first place like this example of a tweet after letting the series owners (Beedie or Damian Kindler) tweet it first;
“Our network has announced the cancellation of Sanctuary, additional news to follow from the series owners”
Also, this is not the first time that show patrol guy has taken leaked stuff from whoever gave it to him and rudely tweeted it before the series owners. He has been wrong so many times he should be ashamed of himself.
Alexis
hey whr you and gateworldrocky have been called out as full of it by gillian horvath one of the sanctuary creators who i admire. at least the patrol guy posted his excuse. you guys better put some proof out there or apologize for this or is the last time i am coming here.
gene
Well, Gene, the person above your post would disagree with you. I have FULL respect for Gillian, but Syfy did in FACT say that they would the first to say one way or the other.
Thank you, Alexis. Call me crazy, but I still have hope that this is not the end forever.
Hi Alexis,
Thank you for your comment. We here at WHR were saddened as well at the announcement about the non renewal of Sanctuary.
Now as to the facts: We agree with Mike that the first word should have come from the network and the owners. Period.
As to Show Patrol; We know and respect Curt Wagner. There is no doubt he was provided with information and “ran with it”. That was never our point. The point is that networks need to control such situations, to stop the leaks by declaring the facts first, and then let normal debate and discourse occur.
As to the comment by Gene. He has been warned previously about “calling people out” trying to stir up the shyte. However, his comment and request are valid, even if his “bed side manner” is not. That is why his comment was approved.
I will respond to him upon return from my offsite project.
Thanks again.
Best Regards,
Kenn
Hello Gene,
The article has been updated to include precisely what WHR received from Syfy proving there was no press release from them and the news was leaked and tweeted before Syfy even had a chance to officially respond. Thank you.
Best Regards,
Kenn
