Welcome back WormholeRiders seeking answers in the Helix!
Well, this is new. I do not ever recall a television series creating such a shift in locations as Helix has. This year the series filmed most of the action on location, rather than a sound stage.
Or, perhaps, it was the fact that the show did not transition to the island that bothered me. The move from one location to another was confusing at first.
Last season, of course, Dr. Allan Farragut (Billy Campbell) and his team from the CDC were engaged in fighting the Narvik crisis in the Ilaria Corporation Arctic Biosystems facility.
The crisis centered around a virus that swept through the town and the lab with two major variants.
The first virus was fatal to anyone who was infected, and the second virus turned patients violent and zombie-like, the CDC Team called them “Vectors”.
When the scientists at the Ilaria Corporation Arctic Biosystems base attempted to quarantine the area to control the outbreak, those affected by the virus held a mutiny and attempted to escape.
The mutiny caused any communication with those outside of the area to be cut off. Eventually, those infected began to improve in health, and those fully cured were able to control the Vectors.
Slowly but surely, life returned to normalcy, and the outbreak was revealed to be a massive scheme cooked up by the nefarious Ilaria Corporation. Then, everything exploded.
At that point, we had little idea who had survived and who had been killed in the explosion.
As season two begins, we have discovered that Alan and Peter Farragut, Julia Walker and Sarah Jordan (Jordan Hayes) have all survived. However, there is as yet no sign of Dr. Hiroshi Hatake (Hiroyuki Sanada), Major Sergio Balleseros (Mark Ghanimé), Anana (Luciana Carro), and Tulok (Meegwun Fairbrother).
There will obviously be deaths as a result of the massive explosion at the end of season one, but it would have been nice to have more closure for the characters who did not continue on to season two. Or will we see these characters again since Mark Ghanimé’s name appears on the credits? I hope so!
Reunion:
After discovering that Peter Farragut’s (Neil Napier) brother, Alan, is part of the strange cult/commune on the island, Sarah then bumps into an infected man in the corridor.
The two things happening to Sarah are a pregnancy that has lasted well past the normal period of time, and a nose bleed that should concern her, but apparently does not.
Is there a clue for the viewers to interpret here? Is her immortality wearing off?
We also find out more about Caleb (Jim Thorburn) who warns Julia not to go to a specific part of the island, and keeps making hints about something that preys on people, but he won’t actually tell her what she needs to be worried about.
This is typical of Helix. If you, as a viewer, have no problem waiting for the payoff of an answer to your questions, this is the show for you.
Enter Soren, the sick boy. Does he have the same illness that was present in the denizens of the Arctic lab? Why did he get led outside of the walls at the end of the episode?
Is he about to be part of the exhibit of sculls and human bones that has still not been explained to us?
The plot thickens with the weird conversation between Peter Farragut and Sarah regarding Alan.
Peter: Why would Ilaria be interested in some crackpot isolationist cult? And why would my brother be investigating them?
Sarah: Well I’d be surprised if he’s here for the food.
Peter: This isn’t a joke. He has been discredited by the CDC and don’t forget about the International arrest warrants. Whatever he is doing here, we’re to have no contact with him.
The next scene is in the future. Jules is examining the bones she and Caleb found in Alan’s grave. The grave is not Alan’s and belongs to more than one person. The skull she found is a woman’s.
Alan has left a clue for Jules; an extra hip bone with a symbol carved on it. Caleb clearly is not telling the truth says that he does not recognize the symbols. Rushing out of the room, Caleb claims he has “to check his traps”.
Sister Amy (Alison Louder) in the cult compound is seen chatting with Kyle (Matt Long). She is sharing details about the procedures, rules, her own birth there, and of course, the spiritual joy all enjoy at the abbey.
Amy, acting professional, appears to gain Kyle’s trust when she offers to show him something.
A few moments later, Sister Amy leads Kyle into a barn storeroom with another, more personal agenda. Obviously seeking what she cannot get at the abbey, Sister Amy takes off her top, baring her breasts to Kyle, and seductively offers him a reward to “be my path!”
Kyle is completely surprised and stops Amy when she grabs him and smooches. She leaves saying that she has to go back to work as Kyle is left to ponder what it all means?
The scene moves to Sarah. Sarah wants to speak to Alan while he is working in the orchard. Sarah fakes an introduction help Alan keep his Brother Jerome cover. Alan / Jerome tells Sarah to get off the island immediately.
Sarah tells Alan the Coast Guard is not coming back for two weeks. As the encounter ends, Alan gives Sarah a hand signal, two fingers over his heart, meaning run away from the island immediately!
Back to the future, Jules pressures Caleb to tell her what the markings mean. He finally admits that the symbols are a map. Caleb suspects Jules is lying about something. Jules reveals that she is also infected!
Sarah confesses to Peter about her orchard meeting with Alan. Peter is not happy about his brother Alan stating: “We’re the CDC; we don’t run” insinuating that Alan ran away from his duty. Sarah retorts “that’s something Alan would say”. They agree that “someone is lying about something” on the island!
As we near the end of “Reunion” Jules finds a child’s skull in the woods. We will find out about just who it likely is at the end of the episode. The skull has predation marks, “probably from animals” says Jules. Caleb corrects her; “Or something worse,”
Something worse is occurring. Sarah sneaks into Alan’s room. Alan is polite, but firm and does not reveal his mission on the island. Sarah refuses to take no for an answer, demanding that Alan owes her and their baby an explanation! Alan is astounded. “I have a child?”
It is here that we find out that Sarah’s still pregnant and has been for 15 months! Sarah reveals that when she received Julia’s spinal fluid at the Arctic Biosystems base, it made her immortal, stopping her aging process … and the yet to be born fetus also.
Alan still will not cooperate refusing to tell Sarah why he is on the island. Alan does say “It’s too important.”
In the final scene, Michael’s henchman Landry, comes to Soren’s quarantine area. Brother Landry tells Soren it’s okay, that his mom wants to see him.
Soren is led outside the abbey compound, where Landry leaves him. Moments later, a horrible humanoid attacks Soren who is carried off screaming! We wonder if anyone heard the poor boy Soren being abducted?
Questions:
Why does Peter want to have no contact with his own brother? Who are the others everyone is afraid of? What is going on with Sarah’s bloody nose?
Why does Alan’s grave contain bones that are not his? Why are there so many bones in the forest? And, who is the hideous humanoid, and what is he up to!?
We at WormholeRiders look forward to finding out all the answers to these questions this season of Helix!

Hi Patricia,
Thanks for your analysis of Reunion. Definitely more questions than answers at this point. And I confess, I am one that likes it that way, so Helix is great on that account!
Best Regards,
Kenn of WHR
Thanks, Kenn, for all the help with this episode. As you know, since I live in the great white north of northern Canada, it has proven challenging to access repeat showings of Helix to provide a review. Your help is definitely a great example of team work.
Patricia
My pleasure Patrica!
Thanks again for your dedication and hard work!
Best regards,
